Staff Product Designer, Core Optimize Analyze team

** Sorry, no pictures. I will update this page as the products I worked on are released.

I was a senior member of the design team responsible for the Analytics tab in the admin section of the platform. Unfortunately I was laid off, along with 1000 other people, in July 2022.

I was the lead designer for three projects:

Polaris Viz Charting Library

Designed new charts, annotations, tooltips, labels, accessibility, error states, animations, and more for the open-source Polaris Viz charting library. Worked closely with four developers, a product manager, an engineering lead, and one other designer to ensure pixel-perfect implementation for mobile and desktop.

Building a charting library is very detail-oriented since there are hundreds of edge cases that must be accounted for. Some examples include:

  • Large data sets. What does a line chart look like if there are a thousand lines?

  • Tiny data sets. What does a bar chart look like if there’s only one bar?

  • Empty data sets. What does a pie chart look like if there is no data?

  • Combination of very large and very small numbers. How can we avoid the pancake effect in bar charts if the first number is a million and all the other numbers are between zero and a hundred?

  • Zeros, null values, and missing data. What’s the best way to distinguish zero values from missing data in a bar chart?

  • Negative numbers. For dashboards that use pie charts, donut charts, or stacked normalized charts, how should we represent negative numbers?

  • Long labels on narrow charts. Is it better to line-wrap or truncate long labels? Should we use end-line or mid-line truncation? What if the labels are dates? When is it appropriate to skip labels?

Live Sitemap & Real Time Dashboard

Hackdays winner for Live Sitemap, a visualization of customer flow through e-commerce websites. A patent was filed with me as the sole inventor.

  • I designed and built a prototype with HTML/CSS/JavaScript and some D3 functions. It’s password protected until the patent is approved. Send me a note to request a peek.

Subsequent to this work, I lead an initiative for a new real-time dashboard to replace the current BFCM live view globe. I reviewed hundreds of customer support tickets, clustered them to identify themes and requirements, and worked closely with a product manager to design and build the prototype that is currently getting implemented. It is scheduled to be released in time for BFCM 2022.

Artifact Data Discovery Platform

Redesigned an internal search engine from the ground up that helps data scientists and engineers find the data assets and tables they need to do their jobs. Worked closely with a product manager and a 5-person development team to understand and prioritize requirements. User-tested low-fi mockups and a hi-fi prototype with 15 participants. New features included:

  • Favoriting items of interest.

  • The ability to create multiple collections of favorited items, and to share these collections with others.

  • Quick search filters that make it easier to find items according to your use case, even if you don’t know what they’re called.

  • A comment thread for each asset to support “tribal knowledge” and share information about broken assets.

  • A dependency tree to make it easier to resolve issues with upstream and downstream dependencies.

Community building

In addition to my project work, I mentored four designers, delivered a data visualization workshop series, led lunch & learns, wrote for the UX Medium channel, contributed to UX reviews, reviewed portfolios for job candidates, participated in weekly Fresh Eyes sessions, paired with other designers for myriad other projects, provided data visualization advice to other teams, and contributed to building a warm and supportive community.

  • This service work is especially important in a 100% remote environment where it takes extra effort to make connections with your co-workers.
